Undiagnosed Sleep Apnea in Women May Lead to Serious Medical Consequences

Both men and women can experience sleep apnea, a condition that involves breathing cessations throughout the sleep process.  These breathing stops and starts may be short, lasting on a few seconds, or as long as up to over 30 seconds.  Women tend to exhibit subtler symptoms than men or different kinds of symptoms that lead to a misdiagnosis.

Sleep apnea PhoenixWomen Display Subtle Symptoms

Cases of women blanking out during the day for short periods of time, confused and unsure of their surroundings, may lead to fear.  Studies conducted at Perelman School of Medicine revealed that more and more women were reporting periods of blanking out during the daytime hours.

One case revealed a woman who was driving to work on a route she took every day, only to find herself on another unknown road.  She experienced a period of blanking out that was unexplainable.

Evaluation and testing of these women showed that most did not snore, wake up gasping for air at night, or experience any other symptoms most commonly related to sleep apnea.  Many of the women did not suffer from daytime sleepiness or other problems.  Instead, these women all displayed similar yet subtle symptom’s.

Subtle sleep apnea symptoms in women included:

  • Headaches in the morning and throughout the day
  • Fatigue
  • Depression

These symptoms are often related to a number of problems or conditions, so diagnosing sleep apnea may be challenging.  Women who have reached menopausal age are often told that their problems are related to menopause; however, in some cases sleep apnea is the issue.

Many women with sleep apnea report feeling run down during the day, but are unsure why.  They may feel fatigued and somewhat emotional because of the poor sleep process.  Women with sleep apnea may wake at night, unsure why they awoke.  If you experience any of the above symptoms and are not sure why, consult with your doctor right away for a complete assessment.
